ISC3 – International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre

ISC3 has established a Research & Education Hub at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg and an Innovation Hub at DECHEMA in Frankfurt.

Research & Education Hub

The Research & Education Hub of ISC3 is allocated at the Institute of Sustainable and Environmental Chemistry at the Faculty of Sustainability of the public Leuphana University of Lüneburg.

The key features of all activities at the Research & Education Hub of ISC3 are interdisciplinarity and openness. This relates to stakeholders, research topics, ideas, concepts and an extensive understanding of sustainable chemistry going far beyond green chemistry, which in turn is an important building block of sustainable chemistry. As such the Research & Education Hub focuses on developing and advancing a better understanding of the opportunities and possible pitfalls of sustainable chemistry. The main focus is put on emerging concepts and hot topics of research in green and sustainable chemistry by doing own research, collecting and assessing good examples of green and sustainable chemistry as well publishing related studies. Together with the other two hubs of the ISC3, the Research & Education Hub also plays a role at the think tank and the clearinghouse of the ISC3 regarding sustainable chemistry solutions in accordance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Research & Education Hub screens, assesses, develops and implements international study programs of sustainable chemistry, offers such courses and trainings on a global level and helps interested third parties such as universities or authorities especially from developing countries to establish such programs in their institutions and to run them independently. As part of education, the Research & Education Hub holds each year the Summer School on Sustainable Chemistry (S3C) which addresses not just academia but also aims to interlink young academics with professionals from authorities, companies and non-governmental organisations. The summer school is complemented by the annual Conference on Green and Sustainable Chemistry.

The Research & Education Hub collaborates with other interested institutions on its various topics and tasks. Prof. Dr. Klaus Kümmerer is the scientific director of the ISC3 Research & Education Hub. As such he is leading an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers. He holds a professorship for Sustainable Chemistry and Resources at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg.

Innovation Hub

DECHEMA is the expert network for chemical engineering and biotechnology in Germany. As a non-profit professional society we represent these fields in science, industry, politics and the general public. DECHEMA promotes scientific and technical exchange among experts from different disciplines, organisations and generations. We consolidate the know-how of over 5,800 individual and sustaining members, bringing together experts from a wide range of disciplines, institutions and generations to stimulate scientific exchange in chemical engineering, process engineering and biotechnology. We identify and evaluate emerging technological trends and facilitate the transfer of research results into industrial applications.

DECHEMA is the hub of an interdisciplinary network of topic-oriented committees, organizing events and professional development courses for all who are interested in a specialized subject area. In addition, we administer funding programmes as well as national and European research clusters. Why is DECHEMA the right place for the ISC3 Innovation Hub? Because DECHEMA has been founded 90 years ago with the mission to connect science and industry, foster the interdisciplinary dialogue and bring research results into applications. DECHEMA has a large national and international network – cross-industry, cross-discipline, open and trustful. DECHEMA’s activities derive from a deep-set expertise in chemical engineering and biotechnology and extend to areas as diverse as chemistry, bioeconomy, pharma, medical technology, resources, energy, and water. And it is certainly no coincidence if these fields seem familiar – they are closely related to the concept and implementation of sustainable chemistry.
